About BCS

Berkeley China Summit (or “BCS”), founded in 2016, holds an annual summit and speaker series featuring high-level discussions about the latest discoveries, trends, and cross-border opportunities. Our mission is to encourage bilateral discussion and collaboration between the US and China, past topics include education, healthcare, technology, innovation, entrepreneurship, and beyond.

 

Over the past 6 years, we have invited over 150 high-profile speakers, including Nobel Laureates Eric Betzig (2014), Randy Schekman (2013), and Turing Award Winners Richard Karp (1985), David Patterson (2017), and John Hennessy (2017).
 

BCS 2022

The 7th Berkeley China Summit will meet you on October 1st on the Berkeley campus. We are honored to have high-profile keynote speakers and panelists to join us, with academic and professional backgrounds from all industries. The keynote speakers for BCS2022 include 2014 Nobel Prize Winner in Chemistry William Moerner, Consul General of the People's Republic of China in San Francisco Jianmin Zhang, and California State Treasure Fiona Ma. The summit also features a dedicated networking session for our audience.

2014 Nobel Prize Winner in Chemistry

William E. Moerner

The fluorescence microscopy method invented by William Moerner, a 2014 Nobel Prize winner in chemistry and a professor of chemistry at Stanford University, broke through the resolution limit of optical microscopes, enabling scientists to observe the physiological activities inside cells, making outstanding achievements for modern medicine and biology.


At this summit, Professor Moerner will share the latest developments and scientific research achievements in the academic field of chemistry, and exchange his personal academic experience and growth story with the audience.

Consul General of the People's Republic of China

in San Francisco
Jianmin Zhang

Jianmin Zhang is currently the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in San Francisco. He used to be Director-General of the Translation Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ambassador and Plenipotentiary to the Czech Republic. During his translation career, he was named one of the most famous Chinese foreign affairs translators and served for many national leaders.


Consul General Zhang Jianmin will share topics related to diplomatic relations and policies, collaborative cooperation, and a future vision between China and the United States.

California State Treasurer

Fiona Ma

California's 34th Secretary of the Treasury, a member of the California Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and a member of the California Women's Leadership Council. In 2018, Fiona became the highest-voted candidate for Secretary of the Treasury in California history, the first woman of color to hold the position and the first female CPA in the position. Before being elected State Treasurer, she served on the California State Equity Commission, working to protect taxpayer rights while ensuring California gets its fair share of tax revenue.

At this summit, Fiona Ma will share information on China-US trade, investment, cooperation, environment, and energy protection, as well as California's economic scale, fiscal taxation, and education equality.

Before that, he served as Crunchbase Architect, Senior Product Manager at Clearbit, and Partner at Courtyard Ventures. With 8 years of experience in the data/AI industry, the main direction is consumer data, privacy, and security.

CEO of Alectio

Jennifer Prendki

The founder and CEO of Alectio, a big data company, focuses on the field of machine learning. On the Alectio platform, the cost of processing data through machine learning has been reduced by 70%. Her team's fundamental mission is to help machine learning teams build models with fewer data, making them more cost-effective.

Yuguang Yuan

Co-founder of robot company Mega Gear, focusing on the application of robots in entertainment industries such as coffee and bartending. Its robot products serve well-known companies such as Audi and Mercedes-Benz, as props for filming, and are displayed as installation landmarks in Xi'an.

Xudong Lv

Lv Xudong, a researcher at Caltech, partner of Taihill Venture, 30 Under 30 on the American Chinese Elite List. Taihill focuses on early-stage investment in deep-tech projects in the United States and has invested in Lightelligence, Kula Bio, MobiDrop, etc. He is also the QuanMol Tech Co-Founder.

Panel Moderator: Li Song

Li Song has worked in the US technology finance industry/Silicon Valley Bank for more than 20 years. He is a veteran of US venture capital and financing and has personally contacted thousands of science and technology companies. He has a close observation and reflection on the secrets of success and the reasons for failure of science and technology companies. At the same time, he has rich operational experience in guiding science and technology customers in the cross-border development of China and the United States. The SVB Asia Link team where he works is one of the main bridges for Sino-US technological and financial cooperation.

Tommaso Di Bartolo

Mr. Bartolo is a serial entrepreneur and start-up investor, author, consultant, and professor at the University of California, Berkeley. He is a consultant to well-known startup accelerators in Silicon Valley such as Google Launchpad, Draper University, and The Alchemist. He has established four technology startups from scratch. He is also keen to give keynote speeches around the world, sharing the experience and lessons from nearly 20 years of entrepreneurship.

Dr. Charles Cheng is the Chief Financial Officer of BCE.IO. He also served as a risk management partner at Amino Capital. He holds an LL.M., LL.B, LL.M, and Ph.D. in Corporate Governance and Practice from Stanford Law School and is a graduate student in International Studies from the Johns Hopkins SAIS School of Advanced International Studies.

Peng Fang

Dr. Fang is the CEO of GCL New Energy and a consulting partner of Walden International. Prior to his current role, Dr. Fang was the former CEO of Nasdaq-listed Jasolar (JASO) and a board member of several startups. He was named by Forbes as one of the 7 most influential people in the global renewable energy field in 2011 and one of the top ten leaders in China's photovoltaic and semiconductor industries and was invited to speak at the 2011 US-China Strategic Energy Dialogue held at the White House in Washington, DC. Dr. Fang received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota and did postdoctoral studies at the University of California, Berkeley.

Michael Lepech is a professor at Stanford University and the Institute for Advanced Study at the Stanford Woods Institute. By developing revolutionary engineering design tools, models, etc., he has pushed the field of civil engineering to the forefront with a focus on sustainability and has also been involved in the construction of sustainable smart cities such as South Korea.

Daniel Kammen

Daniel M. Kammen is a professor of energy at UC Berkeley and holds positions in the Energy and Resources Group, Goldman Sachs School of Public Policy (leading the Center for Environmental Policy), and the Department of Nuclear Engineering. Kammen is the founder of the Renewable and Adaptive Energy Laboratory (RAEL; rael.berkeley.edu) and director of the Transportation Sustainability Research Center from 2007 to 2015.

Ahmed Badruzzaman

Ahmed Badruzzaman is a consultant to US Department of Energy (DOE) on mitigating risks of radionuclide-based well logging tools. His 37 years on down-hole nuclear techniques includes R&D at Chevron, Sandia National Laboratories, and Schlumberger-Doll, and teaching at University of California, Berkeley.
